    My Integrated Therapeutic Approach

    At Inner Awakening Counseling, I work with clients under the guidelines of an integrate approach, merging a wide range of therapeutic systems and methods into an innovative style.

    This integrated style of therapy is highly active, experiential, action-oriented, and comprehensive.

    My Integrated Style of Therapy

    To many, therapy seems like a mystery.

    To demystify the gist of this change process for you, below I will explain some of the MAJOR therapeutic philosophies and principles that guide what I do in therapy:

    ♫   Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples is my preference when doing couple counseling.

    Through Emotionally Focused Therapy, I help couples:

    • express underlying feelings and change their perceptions of the partner;
    • learn to understand underlying emotions;
    • learn to productively express universal emotional needs;
    • receive validation for one's needs;
    • learn connection and attachment as well as individuation;
    • expand their emotional repertoire, language, and skills;
    • build rituals of connection, halting negative interaction cycles, and engaging in behavioral exchanges that can improve attachment.

    ♫   Attachment Based Family Therapy is closely related to evidence-based interpersonal psychotherapy.

    Attachment based family therapy integrates systems theory, structural family therapy, and Narrative therapy into one cohesive therapeutic approach.  It aims to repair interpersonal conflicts among family members and rebuild an emotionally protective, secure-based, parent–child relationship.

    This therapy focuses on building family members' connection skills in the following areas:
    • being responsive to one another's needs; being there for one another;
    • being able to be their own persons; cultivating a sense of authenticity;
    • being able to hear others out with empathy and attunement;
    • being able to show respect even when the situations are difficult.

    ♫   The New Wave of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is the new wave of cognitive behavioral therapy. It combines the traditional evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness training.

    Full living at each
    present moment!
    Through this approach, I guide you to learn to:
    • slow down;
    • develop their observing self;
    • revise their deeply engrained thought patterns;
    • cultivate greater capacity to reauthor their life scripts.

    ♫   EMDR Treatment: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is recognized worldwide as an effective treatment to relieve the distress and severe emotional pain associated with disturbing memories.

    The reprocessing effectively brings an adaptive resolution to these stressors.

    EMDR can be applied to distress associated with any of the following stressors:
    • single event trauma;
    • multiple or complicated trauma;
    • early or present attachment injuries;
    • current “everyday” stressors.

    Treatment usually follows an 8-phase protocol, and uses bilateral eye movements, hand-pulser or audio stimulation to facilitate the reprocessing to arrive at an adaptive resolution.

    Clients often reports feeling empowered with EMDR treatment. Not only their emotional wounds are cleansed, but also their thoughts, feelings and behaviors are transformed to a state of health and resolution.

    ♫   Experiential therapy emphasizes the importance of developing an integrated whole of the person.

    From this perspective, awareness and expression are everything.

    Nurture your awareness!
    Cultivate your capacity
    of self-expression!

    In the right timing, I use Gestalt therapy techniques and behavioral techniques to help you build up those interpersonal skills that are underdeveloped or deficient.

    I help you:
    • express those emotions and messages that you have suppressed and have led to unfinished business;
    • address avoided experiences and get a mastery over them;
    • reclaim your personal voice or your true self.
    I believe that this work is the pathway to integration and wholeness.

    Experiential therapy is highly here-and-now oriented, it brings the split-off mind-body back to awareness and unity. The therapeutic relationship is thus characterized by depth, mutuality, connection, and immediacy.

    ♫   Relational-Cultural Therapy is very close to evidence-based interpersonal psychotherapy.

    Both believe that our unhappiness and struggles originates mostly within the interpersonal context and, therefore, can only be resolved within a corrective interpersonal context.

    Relational-cultural therapy is also very close to Reality Therapy and Choice Theory, because both put a razor-sharp focus on the imperative that we grow to our fullest potential through longstanding relationships.

    Through this lens, I emphasize the importance of building your connection skills through embracing:
    • mutual responsiveness
    • authenticity;
    • mutual empathy;
    • mutual empowerment.

    ♫   Time-Limited Psychodynamic Therapy, especially the more contemporary version ─ evidence-based interpersonal psychotherapy, removes the obstacles that block us from developing fulfilling relationships.

    It encourages:
    • insight into our ways of being in relationships;
    • insight into our patterns of responses and expression;
    • insight into how these patterns affect us and others in our lives.

    These insights help implement a change process that corrects your recursive patterns through the therapeutic relationship and relationships in your lives.

    ♫ To conclude:

    In essence, I integrate these approaches into an innovative and powerful counseling and psychotherapy style to support you to reach the life goals held dear in your hearts.
